Hand sewn masks by Pema Chödön | Elmhurst, NY
Pema Chodon
Pema Chodon, a Tibetan Buddhist, started to hand sew masks in her New York City apartment during the onset of COVID-19. After donating masks to her family and friends, she continued to donate 750 masks to healthcare professionals and seniors.
Pema says that as a Buddhist, born and raised in a Tibetan refugee camp in India, prayer is an integral part to the creation of masks. While she works she recites the mantra of the Green Tara, the Buddha of compassion and reliever of suffering, in the hopes that the mask will provide extra protection for the wearer.
